The Seed

Description

The Seed is a 2008 BVW World that tells a story about a little seed's life journey. An audience controls the seed's movement by swinging their arms left and right, acting as the wind that blows the seed around the screen.

Through their interaction, the audience is taken on a journey through fields, trees, mountains and rain, guiding the seed around obstacles until it is inevitably forced to land to grow and become a flower.

This world was created for our Round 4 assignment in the Building Virtual Worlds class of the Entertainment Technology Center, which is taught by Jesse Schell. The intent was to create a deep narrative experience through interaction.

Aesthetic Design

The Seed's story was meant to be metaphorical so we wanted the art style to reflect that. The world was kept in 2D panels, like stand-up cardboard figures, to give the feeling of a storybook.

We chose to use a "painterly" art style as well, similar to that of Asian brush paintings with dark bleeding lines and pale colors, to give the world a more reflective feel. In addition to this, the art style and 2D objects allowed us to create a large world with numerous objects in our environment.

Contributions
The Seed was created in 2 weeks by a team of 4 students.

My contributions included the 2D art for the environment and the 3D model for the bird.
