Description
Super Mario Jump is a 2008 BVW World built on the playmotion, a device that tracks your shadow on a white screen. It was built for Round 5 of Jesse Schell's Building Virtual World's class. The objective was to create a fun interaction and we had to create it in one week.
In Super Mario Jump you jump on a trampoline to cause Mario to jump as well. The objective is to collect the coins as Mario runs through a course.
Design
Super Mario Jump provided a technical challenge. How to play a 2D platform jumping game when a person's shadow blocks the screen? We took a relatively simple solution by having the player stand behind the running Mario to the side of the screen. In order to compensate for the physical jumping, we also calibrated the playmotion screen to read a different area from what was displayed in order to receive data from the added height of the trampoline.
