Description
Pixter Pals is a game concept created by a team of 7 students as our final assignment for Jesse Schell's Game Design class.
As part of the assignment, we formed an imaginary company and went through the concept development and pitch process of an game. We created a design document, a demo, art assets, advertising material, budget sheet, and risk analysis. For our final exam, we pitched our idea to a panel of real game developers who were told to treat us as if we were a real company coming for an initial game pitch.
The game we chose to design is a photo-taking DSi title for kids. In this game, you collect monsters to care for by taking photos of the real world.
Design/Concept
Pixter Pals was designed for portability and designed to utilize a very intuitive and fun interaction that kids understood and enjoyed: taking photos. The objective was to take photos of various objects and spaces in the real world to capture their essence and put it in the DSi device. This would then add to your collection of new items, monsters, and environments in the game.
The child could then choose to take care of their monsters and engage with it like a pet or battle them against free-roaming monsters or other friends. Both were available to the player and the kid could also choose to do both in the same game.
In addition to these primary interactions, there were other elements in the game, such as a town to explore and NPCs who would request aid, such as specific colored photos or items.
This game was meant to cross between real-world interaction and in-game play. It was designed with children in mind, who are one of the primary users of the DSi.
